Guinea Pigs are sweet and funny little animals that love to socialize with each other and their owners. They're great pets for children, easy to care for, and hardy little pets as long as their basic needs are being met.
For more information, check out these resources the humane society provides.
Guinea Pigs can eat unlimited amounts of fresh timothy or orchard hay, as well as 1/4-1/2 cup of guinea pig pellets per day. When shopping for guinea pig pellets, avoid the varieties that include seeds, nuts, and dried fruits. The best pellets are made from timothy grass/hay and fortified with vitamin C.
A small amount of fresh veggies can be given daily, which will also help to supplement with vitamin C as guinea pigs require this vital nutrient in their diet. Most guinea pigs can eat bell pepper and romaine lettuce daily.
(A complete list of piggy-safe fruits and veggies coming soon.)
Fresh water should be provided daily in a hanging water bottle as these are easiest to keep clean, though a shallow bowl may be used as well.
Guinea Pigs need room to run since they don't use an exercise wheel like some other small pets. The best cages are made of wire with a solid plastic bottom for easy cleaning.
Just by googling "guinea pig c&c cages" you'll be provided with lots of large pre-made cage options or ideas to make one yourself. I like these cages the best because they are very affordable when you build them yourself and are completely customizable for the room/space that your guinea pigs will be living in.
For something a little faster and convenient, I like the Midwest brand Guinea Pig Habitat sold on Chewy.com and Amazon.
There are so many great options for bedding from fleece, to shavings, to paper bedding. I have used fleece in the past with great success, but I felt I had to clean the cages too often. I am currently using a layer of compressed pine pellets (equine or horse bedding) which seems to absorb the best, with a layer of soft kiln-dried shavings on top. With this bedding, it seems I can go a while in-between cleanings and I think it smells the freshest, though it is a bit more work when I do clean.
